3 Fall-Scented Play-Dough Recipes
Yay Fall! What are you and your children’s favorite activities this time of year? Once every fall the kids and I make scented play dough, with scents and colors that remind us of the season. You can make all 3 play dough scents at once if you’re up for it (you’ll need 3 separate bowls, and mix the dry ingredients and spices first) or just choose 1 to try out.
Scented play dough along with some loose parts to stick in is such a creative treat, especially for ages 3-8 years old. Our loose parts are anything from beads, buttons, plastic jewels, & cookie cutters to more natural elements like cinnamon sticks, Navajo dried corn, star anise, dried flowers, seashells, sticks, stones.
The rich spices you add to the fall play dough will make your whole home smell cozy. You can set it up as an invitation to create, with the play dough next to the loose parts, and wait and see what happens. It’s something different every time!
The recipes:
Pumpkin Spice Play Dough
2 cups plain flour (all purpose)
2 tablespoons any kind of oil
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 tsp Pumpkin spice or combine ground cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger
1 to 1.5 cups boiling water (adding in increments until it feels just right)
Food coloring - (orange, or mix red and yellow)
few drops glycerine (optional - it adds to the stretch and shine!)
Method: Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar, pumpkin spices and oil in a large mixing bowl. Add food coloring to the boiling water and then slowly pour it into the dry ingredients while stirring. Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough. Add the glycerine (optional). Once it gets cooler, take it out of the bowl and knead for a couple of minutes. Don’t stop until it’s a play dough consistency! If it’s too try or too wet, you can add more flour or more hot water. Voila!
